Lightbulb DARPA Grand Challenge: hotwiring?

Hello experts,
My name's Ted, and if you haven't already, please read my introduction thread. OK, so you already know that the team and I at Princeton are trying to make a car drive by itself...but first the computer has to start it. So rather than build a robotic arm, we figured that it would be best to bypass the key-turning altogether.
Like I said, we don't know too much about cars, and I've got a hunch that crossing some wires just doesn't cut it anymore, so if anyone knows anything about GMC Canyons, or any off-the-shelf products that are available, I'd really appreciate it. We're trying to talk to the folks at GM, but we're not really a top priority, so we need your help.
If it helps, we DO have a key for the car, so maybe it can be left in the on (not start, but on) position to bypass some security stuff? I don't know...that's why I'm asking.
Thanks everybody, much obliged.
