Arrow North American friends come in plz! I need help !

I am looking for a used car right now in Canada, but I dont have

enough experiences to choose a nice used car. I have been looking for the

information for some days. Certainly, I got some useful information and I have

some ideas about what kind of car I want to get.

Now, here are two kinds of car which I want to get. The first one is

Honda civic couple hatchback (1999-2001),

we know Japanese car is really

good on gas, keep value, long lives and good looking, etc. Although, the

opposite is the japanese car is not safe. If I got any accident, the car must

be napoo.

The second one is Ford Focus ZX3.

This car is really attractive to me.

I saw the same model in WRC video and the people who drive this car must

be really cool. American car is wide body, safe, and comfortable

sits, etc. But I am worry about the car's work. American car is not work

steady as Japanese car's. I have confused about the focus engine. I know

the ZX3's engine Zetec is ford product with YAMAHA company, but I' m not

understand this engine. Is that good ?

The engine is 2.0L, so the car should

be good on gas too. Someone told me the ford car is not good on kept value.

so, I worry about if I want to change other cars, I will get agonising on the

car price.

Dose someone can give me some advice? If you dont understand

these two cars, can you give me some advice about how to choose a used

car? Thank you !

With such gas prices I would buy Civic over Focus. It has better gas mileage (or km since you are in Canada). Sure civic has less Horse power, but it also lighter, so you won't see much of Difference. There were a lot of mentioning about Focus reliability (brakes down more often than it should). About safety - nothing is safe. (Buckle up)

It really depends on what you're going to use the car for but let's do a little research...

(all specs are from base models)

Engine:
Civic: 106-127hp depending on the class makes it safe.
Focus: 110hp 2.0L 4cylinder 16valves.

Safety:
Civic: dual airbag, anti-lock breaks standard
Focus: Most safety features are optional

The fuel economy
Ford ZX3: Manual: 27/36 Automatic: 27/33
Civic: Manual: 33/38 or Automatic: 29/36

Transmission:
Both 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic.

Final Word:
Usually, American cars are softer and roomier than Japanese cars. Japanese cars are usually stiff but thats only in general.
Best things about Civic: Antilock brakes, Fuel economy, Ride, Visibility.
Best things about Focus: Control layout, Handling/roadholding, Fuel economy, Cargo room
Bad things about Civic: Road noise, Rear-seat entry/exit
Bad things about Focus: Acceleration , Engine noise, Rear-seat entry/exit

My Opinion:
I personally have a Ford Escort which I think is similar to the Focus since it is the older version of it. I've had it for nearly 10 years and I think it's an excellent car to simply commute, very good fuel economy and ample space. It has held out very well through the years. It may be good for simple day to day driving but it is not exactly fun. Civic looks like a fun car to drive. About the re-sell value, Focus will last many more years and the model styling is still new. The civic hachback's model has no changed very much over the years, so I have a feeling it will not last as long as the Focus model.

Moding is open for both cars but Civic has much more option than the Focus. If you want a fun to drive car, I would get the Civic but if you want an efficient car, I would go with the Focus.

Thank you very much for your information, it's really useful to me!

As you said if I want an efficient car, I would go with the Focus. I considered

about it. I study in Canada right now and I drive car go to school

everyday. Also, the weather is changeful and it's really cold in winter. So, an

efficient car let me feel more trusty.

CIVIC! Holy crud the CIVIC! American cars on average are not going to be as reliable and gas efficient and all. The Civic has Good crash reports... I would go with the Civic.

By the by... those that drive Focus's are not necessaraly cool. (It is a different model on the WRC... it is the Focus WRC... not a street-worthy car.)

As much as i like the Focus, I see a few generalized misconceptions goin into this conversation.

First off, small Japanese cars are as safe as any other. In fact, overall, I'd rate this particular comparison as going to the Civic in terms of passive safety. I also tend to agree on the reliability of the Civic over the early Focus in general, though there are numerous examples of the Focus that had all the recall work done and are as reliable as anything out there. The Focus drives better (front suspensioon about on par with the Civic's, but the rear suspension is better).

The Civic has a much larger aftermarket, but most of the stuff avaialble for it is tacky ricer crap. There IS good stuff, however, so it pays to go looking. the Zetec engine in the Focus was not developed with yamaha. That was the older SHO V6 and V8 in the Taurus SHO.

If this is only a temporary purchase until you can afford a "nicer" car, then remember the Civic holds its value better. But be aware that it's also more a target for thieves (especially in Canada, where car theft rates are much higher than in the USA)

Personally, I like the Focus better than that generation Civic. But I still like the '93-95 Civic coupe best of all the small coupes. To me it's just a very clean design with lots of potential.

I agree. The focus, if the right MY is purchased, is an exciting car. Id say 2003+ years are good for the focus, and they are very very cheap used.

Thank you~! I probably buy the used car for my school way for 3 years or
longer. So i just want to choose a reliable car. I know civic is pretty good, but I worry about the car work in the winter, because here always have much heavy snow on the road.
