Hello guys & gals,
(and those of you who don't want to be pigeon-holed into either category)
Long time - no type at. Actually a bit surprised to see my account still active. Anyway, been searching the web for 2000 Jetta issues and it seems that I haven't yet hit a forum like this one. Kudos to you guys.
Ok - so the issue:
Vehicle: 2000 VW Jetta - 1.8 turbo - approx 92,000 miles
Problem: Started out with the coolant light (only) going on within 5 minutes of starting the car. (discovered that this was due to low coolant level in the reservoir) Then a few weeks later the temperature light came on again along with the warning sound. Temp gauge was at max but car was behaving normally. This was after about 30 minutes of driving on the highway.
When I would slow down to below 60 MPH, the gauge would slowly start to head back to 190 (normal operating temp). If I were to stop the car completely, the gauge would drop quickly back to 190 (after about 1 minute) and stay there. I could drive the car under 60 with no problem but after about 5 minutes of driving above 60, the temp would rise again and peg.
The temp will now rise within about 10 minutes of driving the car. I added coolant to replace that which was lost but that doesn't seem to have helped. I took the car to a neighbor technician and he stated that the car overheated at idle after about 45 minutes of running. He also performed a test to measure exhaust gasses in the coolant (I wasn't familiar with this test - seems to measure PH levels) and the test turned out positive.
This has lead us to a head gasket / cracked head issue.
Which now leads to the questions:
1) Anybody experience anything similiar? What were your findings?
2) Any known issues with VW heads / head gaskets?
3) Any good sights for 1.8T upgrades / mods ? (opportunity knocking)
As usual, thank you all in advance for any input you may provide. I am hoping to hear from a couple of my favorites and perhaps some new people as well.
