95 Grand Am Ignition

My 95 GA has the 4 cylinder. It appears that by functioning the tilt wheel the ignition switch will not work. It has 148,000 on it. Is there some way to test if the electonic half of the switch is the culprit. At first I could turn the key and the dash would lite up as normal, if I turned the steering wheel it would start. It seemed to be a wire shorting problem. It would not start at all this morning, but when I came home from work the battery was dead. I jumped it and it started. I really think there is a short in the electrnic half of the switch, I can find out for sure for only $45.65 plus the cost of the female Torx sockets. Any comments??
