How much should I pay for a 1997 Expedition?

I am going thinking about buying a Eddie Bauer, V8 5.4L, 1997 Ford Expedition.

Information about it
  • 130,000 miles; Eddie Bauer, AC, Rear Air, Power Steering, Power Windows, Power Door Locks, Tilt Wheel, Cruise Control, AM/FM Stereo, Cassette, Multi Compact Disc, Dual Front Air Bags, ABS, Leather, Third Seat, Running Boards
    <PROBLEMS>
  • Has been in an accident; passanger side hit. No frame damage; bumpers, radiator & hoses replaced.
  • Engine noise; a rattleing sound (will have mechanic investigate).
  • Drivers seat leather is somewhat torn.
  • Minor scratchs throughout SUV.
  • Scratch on a door; paint coming up some.
  • Has some gorilla glue in the back.

They are asking $8,000. Kelley Blue Book says it has a "Private Party Value" of $7,690. Based on the problems, how much would that go down in value? Kelley Blue Book doesn't have an option (for example) if it has been in an accident. I am sure they hurts the value.

Thank you very much for the assistance!

See if you can make them take the price down to 5500 and why would you want to get a damaged car?

Thank you for the reply,

No frame damage happened in the accident. The only thing that had to be replaced was the bumpers, radiator & hoses.

Does anyone else have any ideas on the value of this? Thank you.

Well its also all up to how much you want this vehicle and if you think its worth it cause in the end your the one who pays the money, has to live with the decision and your the only one who sees it and knows what it looks like and how good it really is. What is it worth to you and how much you willing to pay, that is the question. You said its worth about $7600 or so in good shape but this one was in a 'minor' accident so i probly wouldnt want to go any higher then $6000.

BTW: Has the damage already been repaired or do you have to do it? Cause that would also have an impact on the price. Sorry if you already specified this.

IMO, not worth $8,000 or even close to it. I would pay in the range of 4-5K. But if you want to pay $8,000 for it, I advise you to learn how to inspect tires for normal wear and do so and if they aren't worn normally I wouldnt look back at it.

I have inspected the tires and they are wearing normally. It will be hard to get them down that much I would think.

OK well let me ask you this, how long do you want this car to last and how much are you able to spend on repairs in that time span? Thinking along those lines and you come to realize you can get a great car for $8K with well under 100K miles with virtually no problems. Maybe you need something with the room of the expedition, I don't know. It'll help if you explain your situation.

Sounds good to me, as long as you know its what you want. They really arent bad vehicles and their good looking too. I'm just wondering, are you paying the full price he was asking or have you come to an agreement on a lower price?
