2005 chevy cavalier

Trying to find out how to get the codes from a 2005 cavalier 2.2L engine is drving me... My friend has a cavalier that is giving him problems and needs to know how to check to see if there are any codes coming up. Well, I opened my big mouth and said there was a way to do it and now I'm stuck. I can't find how to do it. Can anyone give me some insight so I can save face please? Your would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much for ur help. I'll pass this info on to my friend. He is so distraught over this car. Him and his gf just moved to upstate MI away from their family and now his car won't start. He bought a new starter and it still wont start he says. It makes a winding sound when he tries to start it. He said it doesnt sound like metal on metal but something isnt engaging. Do u have any clues?

Thanks Again
