Question Fan won't turn on and over heating

Hi I am new here and was wondering if anyone had any clue why this is happening. I have a 2002 Transport with 213000 km on it. The past couple of weeks I have noticed the van's temp gage moving up, almost to the 3/4 mark. I checked to make sure I had fluids and I noticed that the fan to cool the engine down wasn't on. When I turned on my A/C the fan turned on and cooled things down. The temp will rise during stop and go traffic or idiling longer than five minutes. Any idea what is causing this and what damage it can do?

Thanks in advance to anyone who reads this

there is a sensor on the motor for the fan to come on when the coolant gets too hot, if you turn the a/c on and the fan works the you know it's probably not the fan motor itself and it eliminates most wiring to the cicuit(not all) test the sensor and check the wires for proper power and ground. the sensor probably crapped out
Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
