Depends on your driving skillz. I could probably "win" in my old 1976 X19.

300zx
222 hp
207 lb-ft tq
3300 lbs

gti
115 hp
122 lb-ft tq
2560 lbs

gti (V6)
172 hp
177 lb-ft tq
2800 lbs

weight/power (lower = better)
300zx (14.9 lb/hp) > gti v6 (16.3 lb/hp) > gti (22.3 lb/hp)

weight/tq (lower = better)
gti v6 (15.8lb/tq) 300zx (15.9 lb/tq) > gti (21 lb/tq)

there are two '98 gti's, one is a worthless I4, one is a V6 about even with your 300zx, in the ratios. depends in which one this guy has that you are racing.

monkey wrench: gti reaches its torque peak at lower rpm's... so it might have a better start, and SLIGHTLY better low end acceleration, but i'd give it to the 300zx based on "the numbers".

Why do so many people ask this question? It's not that simple. We can't tell you if you would or would not win. We know nothing about the specific cars, the driver, the track, the distance ......
It's a question to which there is no definitive answer. It'd just be a guess. But if that's what you want, then "sure, you'd win".

Anything could happen when racing anyways, like you (or the other person) could miss a shift or have a slower reaction time which will also have an effect. Gotta remember, speed isnt everything, you gotta have skill too.

Right, sorry i was not very specific. it is the VR6 (6cyl). We are both relativly good drivers. I was just wondering about those numbers, thanks a bunch for filling me in. Turns out that we really are about even, the accelerations were pretty much exactly the same. However, the GTI corners much better, and since it was on a windy road I fell a little behind. Man, Ive never heard a better sounding engine than that VR6, it was beautiful.

Nice .... at least you corrected yourself, and found out what you wanted.
