Engine oil

hi , i just bought my car (corolla 95 sedan engine: 4A-FE) recently from another owner..now it needs an oil change...what are the chances that the car has been using mineral oil..and if it has will it be risky to change it to synthetic..the seller doesn't know much about oils obviously as he said..'i used castrol 20w-40'..does that mean he used syntethic..cuz i dont know much either lol...help plz

Thats just the weight of the oil, 20w-40. Your car should be using 5w-30. Go with Mobil 1 5w-30.

but the owner's manual recommends 20w-50 for the weather i live in sydney...

but i wanted to know..is there any chance that ...this car has mineral oil in it atm?

I don't believe there is any danger in switching to synthetic..

Synthetic provides better lubrication and last longer than mineral oil.

You would have to take apart the engine and have tests run on the internals Sounds like fun dont it?

A follow up to engine oil

Hey id actually like to futher this discusision. I have a 91 corolla also wiht the 4a-fe engine and have been using castrol high mileage(i have 118,000 mi.) I was thinking of switching to a sythetic oil but and not sure which one would better suti my car.

And Im going to suggest Mobil 1 Oh, and stay the hell away from Penzoil!
