Gas chugging vs sipping

Here's whats up:

My parents are willing to buy my next car, thanks to my dads recent sucsesses at work. By no means am I a small car type of guy. I'm into SUV's and trucks...I like everything big, it's just part of who I am I guess.

With recent gas prices, life's a bitch for those of us who are into SUVs...So I'm considering getting one of these new hybrid SUVs that are starting to hit the market. They sound solid, but I'm no expert on cars. My biggest concern would be repairs...hybrids seem pretty complicated and your average repair shop may not do it for a realistic price.

But there's another option which will have most of you pulling your hair out. I spent my summers with my uncle, when I was younger. He was a big offroad enthusiast and his H1 was his baby. Naturally from countless trips in that car, I grew attached. Every time I see a hummer go by I remember those earlier years, but it seems unrealistic to just use it for urban life. It's list price is far higher than the hybrids which makes it a good candidate (because I can resell it and keep the extra), but I wonder how long it would take before it's 12mpg and increase mileage would drain the extra value, leaving me losing on the deal.

What's your take on the situation? (thanks in advance...sorry this was so long haha)

as much as i hate saying this cause im a big domestic car guy. buy a honda of some sort or even better a sportbike. id rather take 30-40 mpg. then drive something i like with the way gas is now. which is also why my firebird has only been out of the garage maybe 5-6 times this year. it sucks getting 12 mpg. get a honda there resale values are pretty good (Thanks to the ricers)

I'd say go for the SUV if you really like them, i'd rather pay alittle extra (for gas) to be able to drive what i like and am happy in. If you go the route of a Hummer i'd say H1 if you want looks but H2 is probably better for resale (rappers, etc) lol.

Dont Forget To Introduce Yourself, Thanx

Hybrids are newly introduced cars that few know about or care to know about. As far as i know there is the Ford Escape Hybrid and the Lexus RX330 hybrid as the only SUVs but these are small SUVs.

Anyways, you're going to have to do a lot of searching on google to find the information you need. If I were you, i would first look for reliable information on the internet, ask around at many forums, talk to certified technicians at local dealers to find out how good the expertise is on hybrids. My guess is that you're right, it will cost a lot to repair hybrids and thus you should wait until hybrids catch on and more technicians are trained about hybrids.

Or maybe it's about some area you are lacking in.

I cant stand big cars. I like being low to the ground, fast, aerodynamic. I cant stand SUVs, but hate more the people that drive them. Theyre useless. Theyre nothing but gas-chugging mini-vans with less space.

lol i kinda like driving the big vehicles on occasion. makes ya feel like king of the road. you can see miles ahead of you since your taller than all the other cars. and people dont try to cut infront of you as much cause they dont want you to run em over

i have a suzuki swift and a ford f 250. i like the swift because it gets good gas mileage, however, if i ever get hit in that thing, well i probably wont be posting here anymore, its also kinda cramped. i feel alot safer in my truck, and i can tailgate slow cars and they tend to get out of my way pretty quickly. also alot of room to stretch out.
