Does the type of car matter (sports car, luxury car, compact car, super car)???

A high mileage 1987 Buick GNX could probably be found for 10K. Also, I hear those Dodge Omni GLHSs are pretty quick. Ugly as sin, but would make a nice sleeper.

In that era and price range, as a performance car, you have many choices.

I like the FC RX7 as you can build it up in many different ways to be an outstanding overal performer for the least amount of money.

In stock form, the '85-88 Porsche 928S and 928S4 w/the 5.0 DOHC engine is one of the best stock level performers you can buy, and can be had fro under $10k. The 944 Turbo is in that category, but are increasing in price to the point that it can be hard to find one under $10k, then to really make it perform you need another $5k in mods (but then it's extremely fast).

For sport luxury, I'd have to give the nod to the BMW 7 series. You can get a mid '90s 740 or 750 w/sport package under $10k.

Dont forget you could also get a 240SX that's a great platform to work off of

The 1st Gen MR2's are also great to work off of

Early CRX's too
