Smart cars arent in the US, bud. I have mostly the same ideas that you do relating to Ford and GM except I would take a 5.0 Mustang.

The last I heard Smart had not started to import them to the US. They are planning to, but I dont think they have started.

According to this article (From 2004), Smart cars wont start coming here until 2006. But there are supposedly 200 in a warehouse in California waiting to be shipped out when the Feds give the green light, but are NOT being sold by Smart, but by a separate company. Heres the article: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5217861/

Here is another article from ZAP!, the company that will be selling the cars, that states: "ZAP is proud to soon offer one of the most fuel-efficient, gas-powered cars on the planet." Soon offer, i.e.: not availible yet. Here is is: http://www.zapworld.com/cars/smartCar.asp

OK, that may be what the article says, but thats not what the four different smart cars I have seen in my city alone say.

Well, there is a chance that they could have just started (doubtful), or that single civilians imported the cars from Canada. I havent seen a single one in Dallas and while I was in NYC (a place were Smart cars would thrive) I did not see a single one. I think the cars that you saw were imported by a few civilians, not sold by Smart or ZAP! in the US. I did read an article while I was researching from July 2005 saying that ZAP! had gotten permission from the government to begin selling the cars, but the company said that they would not begin selling until later this year, and are begining to teach dealers and building dealerships.
