Lag

My car is an automatic 96 monte carlo 3.1L v6. Now, When I push the pedal all the way down, theres a huge hesitation as in like 1.5 seconds. I think its just downshifting. I hit it, it goes kinda slow, then it downshifts becasue the tack goes up like 2000 rpm all of a sudden, and then its good. Is there a way of reducing the time it takes to downshift or fix this besides getting a manual transmission?

You know what, I'm sorry, how rude of me. My names Eric, and I'm from Indiana. Its so boring here because I'm use to the fast pace life of Chicago. I enjoy cars, want to get more into customizing cars such as installing turbochargers, superchargers, manifolds, interior work, body kits, stuff of that sort. Nice to find a community with the same interest. Oh, and I just replaced the battery on my car 2 days ago, took an hour just to get the battery out.

Since you're pounding the pedal down, the car thinks you're trying to gun it, so it drops a gear in order to increase the RPM, because higher RPM = quicker acceleration. Thats why it takes a second...

The 4T60E trans in that car is unfortunately slightly different than the same year 4L60E used in the Camaro/Firebird, so the normal shift kits may not work (check with B&M directly for more info).

IPT has a modded valve body for that trans, and a modded pressure control solenoid, combined to make the car shift much better, faster, and firmer, as well as increase longetivity. But, the IPT stuff is kind of pricy (4500 for the modded valve body, vs $60 for a B&M kit to put into your valve body, if the 4L60E stuff will fit).
