My mom has a 2004 Sentra. She's driven Sentras for about 15 years now and I think they are great, reliable cars. It's probably relatively the same width of the Corolla. Have you thought of Jettas?

It scores good or average on all safety tests and comes with both airbags and optionals on the side. You can get a used one with very low miles for under $20,000.
A few things:
1) its mpg not mph
2) sometimes too little hp is a bad thing
3) what do you/ what does she want to drive?

Id prolly say... a Toyota Corolla LE.

yea ok i'm gonna tell a horrible driver (she's not horrible but definetly needs more on-road practice) to get a car with 240hp. A car that does 0-60 in just over 6 seconds. I personally rather get a Volvo for myself . The jetta is a nice car but i don't think she'll be able to control them as well because of how they are basically wide. My neigbor has a Jetta i'm gonna ask him to test drive it next time i talk to him i'd love to feel how they go. A civic is something she's considering... a RSX is way to sporty for her. Keep it coming guys i love how this thread is coming along a lot of good advice coming left and right

How about the ultimate chick car: the Miata/MX-5. Or the Solstice. Neither have a ton of power, but are sporty. Same for the Mini Cooper. I don't know how any of these cars rate safety-wise, and they're probably a little more fun than what you are looking for, but keep in mind that if you buy it for her, you'll probably get to drive it to. That being said, get her a 03-04 Cobra

The Sentra isn't a bad car...my dad drives one to work every day...about 60km from here and has had no problems with it so far...

couldn't handle .....? just cos a car's got a bit of power, doesn't mean you have to throw it all over the road or push your arse into the back seat.

Yeah it does...

jk, I've passed the Boy Racer stage of my life (about 6months after passing my test). I must admit though, if I had a high powered car...I think I'd be tempted, especially if it was RWD

Thats what I'm talking about... altho I must say my friend is still goin strong with cars, first car at age 15 was a 1987 mustang 5.0 Convertible 40k miles mint condition, then onto a 1992I believe Corvette, totalled, got insurance and is now on his 1998 Mustang Cobra Convertible. He will be 18 this summer.
