RAV 4 Starting problems

I have a 1997 Toyota Rav 4, If I just turn the key the engine fires 2-3 times and then it just turns over and over. If I push the gas pedal down while turning the key it fires and starts and runs......that is until I let off the gas pedal. As soon as I do the engine just dies out.

I am assuming it is the fuel pump, but want someone to confirm this. Will the car start like this with a bad fuel pump or is there something else I should be looking at ???

could be a number of things. from the cat. converter to fuel pump. can you hear the fuel pump turn on when you turn the key to the run position?

No I can not hear the fuel pump kick in when I turn the key. I had my wife go in the car and turn the key while I held my ear to the open gas cap. I heard nothing.

What is the ebst way to check this ?

I assume if it is bad and I have someone sit inside holding the gas down to keep it running and disconnect the battery it should die ?

But why would it start and run with the gas pedal held down and die when released if it was the alternator ?

either take the alternator off and have it checked at a parts store, or take a volt meter and check the voltage at the battery when the car is running. it should read 14 volts or so.

But does that mean the fuel pump for certain ?

The last thing I want to do is sit out there and pull out the seat and play around with the fuel pump and gas in 25 degree temps if I don't have to.

I think there is a five wire plug going into the top of the access door, should more than one of them be getting power with the key turned ? of does anyone know how to jumper or ??? I can at least check to make sure powers ig going to the pump before pulling it out.

Could the alternator cause it to start witht he gas pedal pressed and die when it is released ?

i wouldn't use a jumper wire around gas.

yes, when you turn the key to the run position (not start) you should hear the pump "prime" itself.
