Car starts with gas pedal pressed and dies when released ??

I have a Rav 4 that will start and run with the gas pedal pressed and it dies as soon as the gas pedal is released.

If I try and start it with out pressing the gas pedal it fires maybe 2-3 times and then just turns over with out firing.

I was assuming fuel pump is bad, but if the fuel pump is bad and not pressurizing the system, what is getting the gas to the engine when I press the gas pedal and causing it to stop as soon as I release the pedal ?

I am stumped and need to get this fixed ASAP.

Someone please help me.

just read the other thread, sounds to me like your iac valve, certain parts stores will sell a tester for it that connects to the iac connecter and it will light up it it recieves signal(meaning wiring is good not neccessarily that you're getting the right signal) if this checks out the you might want to check the valve itself it might be stuck or it might have an internal open

What is the iac valve ?

Someone told me the problem was the Throttle position sensor, what are your thoughts on that ?

Idle Air Control valve, it allows air to enter the engine at idle(with throttle closed)some change positions to compensate for additional loads such as turning the a/c on or steering during idle. I doubt its the TPS.

How about for the alternator to produce more power? cuz mine does that for some odd reason. If my battery is low then it idles at 1600...if its charged then it runs at 800...I have no idea why it does this but anyway (actually tested it by draining it with my stereo for a bit, was at 1600 idle. By the time I got home the idle was down to 800 again....)
