2000 Ford Focus transmission

i have a standard transmission 2000 ford focus, and the transmission seems to be stuck in first gear. the stick will move up and back (as if between first and second) but will not actually shift. the stick is also physically unable to move left and right. any ideas?

Your car has a cable actuated shift mechanism. One cable controls the fore and aft movement, the other controls the lateral movement. It sounds to me like the fore/aft cable is broken or disconnected. A quick inspection under the hood first, then under the console if needed, should confirm my suspicions and set you on your course of action.
