Street Legal

Is there a street legal limit on horsepower?
I hear stuff like "Man how is that car street legal"

What makes a car unstreet legal?

There's no hp limit but in order to have a fast car you sometimes have to brake a few laws that vary from place to place.

A doesn't even have to be fast to be illegal, for instance in australia it's illegal to have you car lower than 100mm from the ground, this includes any leads or wires hanging from the bottom of your car.

You see it's laws like that that make a non-street legal.

For example where I am from effect lights are illegal and so are tented windows so those things make a car illegal

probably depends upon where you live.
out here in the wild, wild west....... Anything goes.
Straight pipes, open headers, you name it.
The thing that matters most is lights, turn signals, windshield wipers.
I am not aware of any law in the United States that regulates Horsepower,
no matter how much ya' got.

Does anyone know the law against slicks? I have seen cars at local car shows that are tubbed and run slicks and I don't know if it's legal and they just chance it, but I've also heard to run slicks you need to have some tread like at least a small pattern so you can get traction if its wet out or anything. Anymore detail will be appreciated.

I think the way for measuring if your tread was too small was the penny test...grab a penny (American) and put it head down into the tread, if you can't see the tip of Lincoln's head, then you're good, I think it was like .03 inches or something...

BTW stuff like CD's hanging on the rearview mirror are not legal either...

As far as I know, true slicks are not D.O.T. approved, and therefore not street legal. As far as a car itself being street legal, that varies from state to state. I highly doubt that there is a limit on h.p. though. Don't know how they would enforce it either.

I think he was joking about Dodge Neons...I know for a fact the neons underneath your car are illegal everywhere (distracts drivers too much)

The people that say "man how is that street legal" have just never seen anything faster than a Civic EX with an intake, exhaust, wing, "RIMZ", and a body kit.

Thats cool. Id have to guess it has a different engine. You speaking of the WRX or the STi here bud? Because that sounds a bit more on target.
