Misfiring system/ALS (Anti-Lag System)

Hold on to you hats people I'm actually asking a question and not post whoring.

Anyway my question is can someone explain to me exactly what a misfiring system/ALS(Anti-Lag System) does? I originally thought that this was a bad thing but apparently rally cars use this system, can anyone shed some light on this?
