But guys, this is really getting off topic, I want suggestions of CARS. Moderately fast cars that are reliable, cheap and good looking. (with good gas mileage to boot) - I need your input here

Let me add that as of now I'm also looking at:

02-03 Subaru WRX
Scion tC (is it too slow??)
300ZX
Honda Prelude
Acura Integra

Preludes are really nice... If u would go with integra than go with a GSR. You could probably find a GSR with like 70k miles for 8k so u could pay insurance yourself and add some performance upgrades to it.( not that it need em)
As for which is faster i would say
1. 97-01 Prelude
2. 95-01 Integra GSR
3. GTI ( unless it's VR6 then i dunno)

If u are going more for handling i would switch the order to Integra, GTI Prelude. (heavy) I have driven each one when looking for my car. I wanted the GTI but it was out of my price range since i was paying the full amount on the spot with cash of my own money.( 7k budget) I found a some preludes with like 90k miles on em for 7k but then insurance would be a strap for me and so would gas. So then i found my integra for $5600 all stock with 69k miles. I paid all insurance, pay my own gas, and still had money to buy new tires+wheels, and other visual upgrades. My advice to you would be to buy a car for maybe like 8k or 9k. If i would have 12k on car i think i would buy a GSR and do performance mods to it, if i would have to keep it completly stock then i would buy the GTI.

Test drive all the cars that you like and see which u like more.
Btw u might have trouble finding a WRX for 12k but if u can then get it....

the kids parents will pay for his insurance so why do you try to convince him to pay for it on his own? My advice is still to get a mid mileage 300zx and you will have lots of money left over to customize it heavily. If I were you I would keep the engine stock because being a 10 year old car im sure its not the most reliable (though it is japanese so it wont be bad) but mostly because you will be less tempted to speed all the time and crash it.

Nissan 300ZX, not tempted to speed? What country are you from??? He's 16, just getting his license, getting a nice "fast" sports car, please explain how he'll be less tempted to speed and crash it. I'd put money he wrecks his new sports car within a year.

A 300ZX N/A isnt a quick vehicle. It's slower than a V6 Accord

So was my 88 nissan sentra, doesn;t mean I wasn;t trying to speed (that little thing topped out at 90mph). A big heavy powerful car like the 300zx is more than capable of handling speed in excess of 90 mph. Besides, we were talking about fast, not quick

You could beat an 88 Nissan Sentra Automatic Station wagon, but I'm not sure if you could have beat my Dad's 88 Nissan Sentra Coupe with a 5 speed MT. That thing could really get up for an underpowered 4 banger. Keep in mind that 90 mph in an old econobox like the Sentra station wagon without any performance mods was one of the scariest experiences I've had.

Heck any car today is pretty fast (fast being well over posted speed limits). You can get an excursion close to 100mph.

If you ask me going 90mph in an Accord is more dangerous than going 90mph in the 300ZX simply because the ZX will handle better and get you out of a situation better than the Accord will (it outhandles and outbrakes the Accord).

You ask me, at 16 you don't have any experience to handle any car at 90mph.

somebody with enough self control to have this kind of money to spend on their first car because they earned it is probably responsible enough to handle a 300zx n/a.

Thank you, never thought of it like that although I think I'm perfectly capable of handling the twin turbo one as well
