What's in a name?

Ok, here in England....or Europe as a whole in some cases, it seems that our versions of popular cars are totally different to your's in the States. So, is it literally just a name, ie; Chevy Cavalier is nothing like Vauxhall's, yet they are pretty much the same company or atleast owned by GM! lol. And more recently, Fords capri....have a look at the following piccys!

Now I decided to post this here as it's car related, even though the board description says otherwise....just seems more sensible lol

Chevy Cavalier

Vauxhall Cavalier

Our Capri

Your Capri

Our Ecort

Your Escort...

I'm sure there's probably more though lol....can somebody explain please?

Cliffy, we got your Capris for many years in the US. In fact, from '70-78 the Capris were the same on both sides of the pond. In '79, teh US Capri became a rebadged/reskinned Mustang, and then in the late '80s, we got that Australian built, Mazda 323 based, XR2 convertible.

The earlier Cavaliers were a little closer, but they were engineered different. And we always complained that Europe got the better versions.

OK, well I have two completely uneduacted guesses...

Marketing. Maybe Vauxhall sounds cooler than Chevy to Europeans?

Badge engineing while keeping old brands around. Did GM buy out Vauxhall or something and just keep the name around cause people like/are familiar(sp? good grief it's too late...) with it? Then just rebadge the US car to keep costs down?

idk, just me tryin think at midnight

Cheers Chris, I gad no idea you guys had our Capri's at some point...

And more recently, our Chevy...

...And your chevy, lol....

Ok, there are more Euro/US Chevrolet's that are far more similar than that, I was just joking a bit when I posted these pics. I'm assuming we have smller Chevy's to appeal to our market?

For those not in the know, Chevrolet UK is basically Daewoo, who went bust. They carried on with their lineup, but using the Chevrolet name, all took place last year I believe

lol.....Funny how manufacturers use different names for cars.....and change their looks slightly to adapt to the market!.....Is the Aveo a new car over there? sinse Deawoo was taken over by Chevy?...I'm assuming it is as Daewoo didn't exist over there? right?

Actually, we had Daewoo as a separate line, with the Leganza, Nubira and Lanos. The Aveo is new as Chevy's entry level economy car (which, like all new cars, teenage boys think is crap if it isn't a race car or race car wannabe). Daewoo also used to build the Opel Kadette with Pontiac badges to sell here as the Pontiac LeMans for a few years...

Bastards. You can go there through Google, but they disabled drect hotlinking. Yeah, we're going to steal your old pictures for nefarious purposes! Sheesh...
