Question 96 cavilier shuts down while driving

I have a 96 cavilier, 2.2L, that while you are driving will just shut down, then the elctric speedometer starts bouncing between 0-70 while the engine is shut down. Sometimes the theft prevention light remains on. Is this a computer problem. Is there any way to get another computer via e-bay or the salvage yard and get it programed by by-passing the dealer? ( saving $$$$)

Cool check

it would'nt hurt to check all fuses.
in the car and under the hood.
make sure your battery is good
and the cables are tight on the battery and where they lead to.

in line fuse

On my 92 Z24 I had a problem with it just shutting down on occasion. It turned out to be an inline fuse (fuse inside the wire under the hood). It was fairly cheep to fix. If it turns out to be the computer and you cant find one in the scrap yards around you, there are tons of cavaliers in the one here. I could arange to have one sent to you. Hope this helps.
