98' plymouth breeze blinks?

hi! i'm new here.
my sons 98 breeze odometer blinks.
i replaced my son's car battery last week, because he left the lights.
yetersday he told me the car was acting funny.
this morning the car's battery is dead with 3 volts.
i jumpped it and left charging for about 10 minutes.
the moment i disconnected the jumper cables the breeze started to run a little rough.
then i notice the odometer was blinking.
turn the car off.
the battery had 3 volts.
my son tried to started it and voltage went to 1/2 volt.
could it be the alternator?
thanks.

Very well could be alternator or bad connection to the alternator. Do you know how to check the amperage on your alternator? Most run between 40 and 60, but some are set as high as 100+ (although not as common). If it's below that, replacement would be a good option.

I would also recommend checking the wiring and connections to your alternator. While you are at it, also check the serpentine belt on the alternator. Is it tight enough? Is it squeeling? This can also cause you to lose a charge.

Smile back from o'reillys

hey guys!
thanks for your suggestions.
my son took the breeze to o'reillys and i follow him.
they check the alternator and said that it was charging, but it had a bad diode.
i saw it on that meter that he had.
it's on order, it's coming from out of town.
$144.99 plus 75.00 core charge plus tax=$237.36
i must say that this has been a good car so far.
bought it in 2000.
it does have a tendency of leaking oil about once everyyear an a half.
i'll let you know what happens tomorrow.
thanks

i did check the belt, it looks good.
and there is no noise.

Good deal, AND you will get the $75 core charge back when you bring your old alternator in with receipt.

On a side note, did you say you bought a brand new battery? If so, make sure you fully charge that battery before you install that alternator. If it's not brand new, get a new one.

Wink working!

ok, got the alternator install and battery charged, went around the loop for a test drive.
adout 4 miles later the battery light comes on.
at home the battery had 3 volts, w/the light on 1/2 volt(car not running).
next day took the battery back to o'reillys.
checks out good?
took the car to o'reillys.
new alternator and new battery checks good?
check all fuses=good.
the only thing i can think of is before the test run the cables weren't on tight.
the car is now running great(170,044 miles).

thanks for your help!
