Wow, you ask for a bunch of help with your Golf, and now you think you aren't even going to get it. Smooooooth.

Dont buy a golf they are slow and fat. LT1 Trans am Would be a good choice.
TT 300ZX also come to mind. Maybe an Older VR4. Im just a big FWD hater so Its really hard for me to think of any other cars to recomend for under 5K. Maybe a 600cc Bike?

He's 16...the point is to get a slower car that can be modified...I wouldn't reccomend any of those, and a bike couldn't be driven all year round (I'm guessing that's what he wants)...

I'd suggest an Integra, or a Prelude

Well I personally would not reccomend anything FWD as a car to be modified because you start making some power and it makes it a pain in the ass to hook because when you go to take off your power driven wheels become unloaded. I would suggest a V6 version of one of the ever popular pony cars then.

The 3000GT VR4 and 300ZXTT are both well over $5000. The average rate for a good mileage 300ZXTT is about double that.

You should be able to easily find those for that price range, they aren't that rare/uncommon. I'm guessing you'd want the 305 (or maybe a 350 if they all had that option).

Nissan 240SX or a Taurus SHO might be worth looking into. You could also get a Miata. I know they are considered girly, but if you're secure enough with your masculinity you'll see that they are cheap, RWD, and handle really well.

Nice aftermarket support. If you can get one for 2000 you can put 7PSI into it and then save, and get a bigger turbo as well as stronger internals. OR make it all motor

The miata thing sounded good. A buddy at school usually drives a BMW M Coupe and he so dman happy on the days his dad lets him drive the Turbocharged Miata. He says It a better car in every category.

There's a guy here that sometimes drives his Miata in the snow (and I'm in Ontario)...

What kind of pickups? You said something about the Miata not being good for hauling friends, so unless you mean and extended cab truck or Blazer/Jimmy/Explorer/etc then you're out of luck. Personally I think a truck is a good idea depending what you want it for, personally I'd suggest a small SUV (like the trucks mentioned above).
