'94 Explorer Acceleration

I drive a '94 Explorer V6 4.0 Liter. It has just over 80,000 miles on it and has had no need for major repairs besides the brakes.

The problem is when I go to punch the gas, it lags for 1 to 2 seconds before the engine kicks in. Also, when I put it in neutral and rev up the engine won't exceed 3,000 RPM. The indicator says it should be able to go up to 5,000 but it just won't. It stops just past the 3,000 RPM mark and begins to putt.

I took apart the catalyac converter today and tried it without anything on it to see if that may have been the problem. No dice.

I changed the fuel filter, no difference. Then I checked the fuel line for leaks, no luck there either.

Any ideas?
