96 Mystique headlights

Hello,

I'm new to this forum, and hoping someone can help me with this problem. I bought my 96 Mystique in 1997, with 14000 miles on it, and have been driving it since then. My son is now going to take the car. I've always had a problem with the headlights that didn't bother me too much, but I would prefer to resolve it now since my son is going to be driving it.

The dim headlights don't produce enough light at night. The brights work fine. I've taken the car to the ford dealer, and they say the headlights are fine, but they truly are not.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Ford would probably have tested the lights on their machine (used to test the level of headlamps). Chances are that they are okay legally, just far too dim in comparisom with more modern units. Alot of cars have this problem, mainly due to the type of bulb used, for example, modern cars that DO NOT have xenon (blue/white) headlamps often use Halogen bulbs that are marginally brighter than older style bulbs (I believe they're H7 (newer) or H4 (older) bulbs?). A conversion would be uneconomical though, I recommend that you buy bulbs that are 30% to 50% brighter, in the correct format of course! Make sure they're road legal though lol (should say on the packaging....unless they're bought from an unscrupulous person lol)
