fan belt broke/knocking engine

I have a 95 toyota camry. It was running great until today. I pulled up into a parking lot and my a/c light started blinking and fan started blowing out cool air. I smelled burning rubber smell. I had only driven 1/4 mile on the car today. I lifted the hood and saw that the fan belt had slipped off and was hanging there. Wasn't broken. I went to drive the car around the back of the store to where their car center was and the engine started knocking very loudly and shaking. Could the fan belt slipping off cause that noice as well? or do you think more damage was done?

the belt could have damaged something, see, your not meant to run an engine without the belt, it can do damage ( i know, my dads cab went through 2 engine changes because of belt damage )

That's what I'd think, too. There's not really anything else that's associated with the Fanbelt that would cause the engine to play up!

I suppose it depends which serpentine belt broke, but is it possible the belt is connected to the crankshaft? Wouldn't that cause irratic shaking?

Does the '95 Camry have serpentine belts? Shouldn't matter anyway.
