87 mercury tracer

got some questions about fixing an alternator on an 87 mercury tracer.
should i go used or used, used would prlly be a bitch to get a hold of eh?
any tips or help would be apreshiated

Dude, you finally asked one of THOSE questions. How much money do you have to spend? How long do you want it to last? How much difference in price is there between reman and used? What kind of warranties do they come with?

Look at it this way. You already have a used alternator, who says the next one will be any better. The reman will usually last longer but... Sometimes you end up getting a near new one from a yard for less. Decisions, decisions.

Crap that was a shottie post,"should i go used or used?" lol. Its not my money so im not sure on how much is to be spent, on students pay cheaper is better. I live in a small town so i dunno if any of the scrap yards would have a tracer but ill look. As far prices and warranties, i havent found one yet so i dunno.

A Tracer is nothing more than an Escort with a different name. There should be millions of them around.

Hey, allright got the rebuilt alt. and was wondering if ne 1 could gimmi some tips or advice on puting it in. i know i can do it, i just wanna know im doing it properly(only ever seen it being done). Anything i should watch out for, etc.?

Just make sure you disconnect the negative post on the battery before you start, then hook it back up last. Also don't over tighten the belt or else you'll tear up the bearings. Have fun.

Thanks, got some more for ya tho (whats new, eh) what about belt tension? and im guessing im gonna need a torque wrench?

1. Torque wrench, we don't need no stinking torque wrench.

2. Like I said earlier just don't over tighten the belt. If you're not sure start loose and if it slips tighten it more.

lol, allright thanks again man, ive got a week before everythings in order so i think im gonna pick up a haynes manual, as u where saying a tracer is a escort with a different name so the manual can be for one or the other? None the less ill get'er done, lil bit shakey goin in but ill get it all in.

The Haynes manuals are one in the same.
