Does the mini have sensitive airbags?

Alright so me and 2 buddies were in the 2002 mini cooper S last night, on a windy road, just having a good time. Anyway here is what happened.

We were just driving around, and my friend took a corner too sharply, and hit a pothole with the passanger side wheels. Then in an instant, the DRIVERS side curtain and side airbags deployed. We got the car started again just fine, but my question is this.

Does the mini have VERY touchy airbags, or maybe the computer (SRS i think it is) assumed that when we hit with the passangers side, that the car flipped, and thats why it set those specific airbags off? Noone got hurt, but im just wondering why the hell this happened.

Cause I heard a low bang, and I thought we blew a tire, but then i opened my eyes and there was white smoke everywhere, and i saw the curtain bags deployed

I don't understand how that was responding to nighthawk, lol. Anyway, NO airbags should deploy unessasarily, check any recals the MINI has had recently!

The only time an airbag should deploy is if the sensor is impacted with enough force to trigger the airbag system. It requires actual pressure against the sensor for this to happen, so to have them deploy by hitting a pothole is balderdash.

Maybe it's a safety measure because I've hit my head into the window when a car goes over a bump that's big enough...But I'm not sure how it would trip the sensor, nor do I know where the sensor is lol.

The front sensors are mounted on the actual bumper(i'm not talking about that plastic piece you call a bumper, but the steel bumper), the side ones I would imagine are in the doors :S

If my memory serves me right, it can be in the door or in the pillar. Depending on model/manufacturer.

Maybe this will help, but the car was rearended by a drunk driver a week prior, and the shop he took it to didnt reset something...maybe this is why?

Shouldn't matter, the sensors are pressure-activated, as I stated previously, it would require something pushing against them with enough force to trigger them.

....Read my first and last posts, and actually try to comprehend what I am saying. Hitting a pothole, even hard enough to crack a rim, should not cause an airbag to deploy. I have railed into potholes pretty badly, once bad enough that I thought I had actually cracked my rim, and never had that occur.

how fast were you going when you hit the pothole and how deep was it. If it happens again don't breathe in the smoke, its bad for the body.

Then I am clueless as to why it happened.
