I have one, and use it. It was given to me from a friend. I only find it useful in city and on the interstate. Especially on the interstate. But I don't trust them, or rely on them. They just lessen your chances of getting caught speeding in SOME situations.

Don't move when you get pulled over, because then they think you're reaching for a gun or some shit like that and they'll get all pissed. You definetely shouldn't be trying to rip your radar detector off the windshield and hide it.
Some radar detectors work. A good rule of thumb with radar detectors (and for most other things to) is that the more money you pay, the better you get. Look on eopinions.com or somewhere like that to find which ones are good.

My buddy uses an escort in all his cars. The M Coupe the S/C M3 and His S/C Miata. He fabricates a little holder for them way up high on the windshield and they are next to unnoticable but apparently they are still in pretty good range because we are constantly out speeding and hsi is always the first to get the signal.

When Im done with my suspension I will be installing a Hidden Laser/radar jammer/detector system. Ive seen some pretty cool stuff they do LS1tech. I was looking into the one chris_knows was talkin about and considered buy it.

while i definitely agree the more money the better the radar, i bought mine for $60 and i havent gotten a ticket since then speeding related anyway

alot of people i know use the cobra brand, they seem to work fairly well in the SE US where i live. i just happened to see the cheapest one and it's worked great. i figured if it even saves me from one ticket it's paid itself off.
and i dont know about the UK but at least in good ole mississippi and im pretty sure the surrounding states radar [i]detectors[i] arent illegal but jammers are for sure bad stuff
