Engine trouble!! Help!!

Hi,

I know how expensive engine repair can get so I am trying to obtain as much information as possible before I get the work done. Also, I do not know much about cars.

There is a clicking sound when idling that becomes more rapid as I hit the gas. The "check engine" light will come on for a few days then it will go off for a few days. It has been doing this for a few weeks. Just a few days ago, I was sitting at a stop light and when I went to accelerate, the car completely shut down. I pulled over and restarted it without any problems and drove home without any further issues.

Any ideas?
Rich

Do you think it's injectors or is the sound too loud?

I really couldn't tell you. I have no idea what it is. Someone who looked at it briefly said it may be the lifters, but I don't know anything about that.

The clicking sound is more noticeable when sitting inside the car as opposed to listening to it from under the hood if that helps at all.

Sounds like it could be the lifters. Is the oil topped off?

What kind of car is it.
Did you pull the codes? and if so what are they?

Are there any performance problems?
