I think the main thing is defining "compact". Some people like them big and some like them small. This is a case where size really does matter to the individual.
I live and die with my 2AAA Mini-Mag that I've had since 1989 (don't ask me how I know the date). It's especially good for underdash work. For anything more demanding in the shop I use my Central Tools bounce lights. Away from the shop the weapon of choice is a Mag 3C flashlight.
