Question Difference between 4x4 and All wheel drive?

Hey guys,

What is the difference between 4x4 and all wheel drive?

I was told that 4x4 isn't truely 4x4 as it only uses two tires for power, one in the front and one in the back.

Is all wheel drive just a smart 4x4?

Thanks!
