Water pump bypass hose on a '96 Nissan Pathfinder

Good morning!

I have a '96 Nissan Pathfinder, Automatic, that recently started behaving badly. I took it to a repair shop and they told me the water pump bypass hose needed to be replaced. They said it was in a "weird" spot and, while the part was only about $13.00, the labor was significantly higher, leaving me with an estimate of about $550.00.

I called around and another shop gave me an estimate of around $100.00 for the same job, so I had it towed over there. I told them the story from the other shop and now the new shop called me this morning and quoted me $450.00 to do it. Better, yes, but it still seems out of sight.

So, I thought I'd ask for your advice. Is the water pump bypass hose on a '96 Nissan Pathfinder truly in such a weird place that it would lead to over $300.00 in labor costs just to get it out and put the new one in? Or are they all yanking my chain?

Thanks in advance!
