Question Starter gives a loud noise without engine cranking

Hiya all... since about 3 months i've started having this problem with my car that sometimes when i try to start it, it just gives out a loud noise instead of the normal engine cranking.

What is this and why does it happen? It happens totally randomly. Its not a very frequent occurance though, but it does happen.

And strangely this problem has disappeared for about 2 weeks, the only difference between these 2 weeks and earlier is that the temperature has gone down significantly.

Please throw some light on this issue....

Can you describe what it sounds like. It is grinding? Sometimes if it doesn't engage the gears fast enough it will make a loud grinding sound. Which is usually fixed by replacing the solenoid.
