Ignition problem

I own a 1994 Ford Escort, 4door, automatic, 1.9L engine.

A couple weeks ago I took it for a drive late at night, it was probably 15 degrees Fahrenheit or colder. When I shut off my car and took my key out of the ignition the engine would turn over sounding like it was trying to start. It was late night and I didn't know who to call so I just left it in the parking lot making the noise all night(probably a bad choice).

The next day the battery was corroded and dead, so I just left it there for a couple weeks. Yesterday I was finally able to get to the store to buy a new battery, with the help of a friend(whose dad is a mechanic but lives far away) we put the new battery in. As soon as the terminals were hooked up the engine started making the same sound trying to turn over(again the keys weren't in the ignition), my friend disconnected the battery, then connected it again and nothing happened. So then I tried starting the car with my keys and nothing happened, didn't crank at all and note also that the fan, wipers, blinkers, and stereo do not work, but the headlights and hazard lights will turn on. And also. I have a remote car starter, I tried that today and the car started just fine, but when I put the key in and pushed the brake it shut off.

Any thoughts/ suggestions would be helpful. I would like to avoid getting it towed to a garage since I'm just a poor college student.
thank you

That is a very interesting electrical gremlin you got there. I would almost bet it has to do with the remote start malfunctioning or shorting out on something. I have never run into an issue like this before, so I'm really at a loss besides that.
