Thoughts on the new Mustang GT-500

Theres alot of buzz about this car. I think it will be the biggest hit in the car world for years to come. What are your thoughts? I think that Chevrolet and Daimler-Chyrsler better step it up!!!

Here are some things people have said:

After seeing the GT500 in New York, AutoWeek magazine wrote: "On paper, the GT500 -- in development for more than a year and officially approved two months ago -- has enough power and flair to put Chevrolet's base Corvette C6 smack on the trailer."

Edmunds.com wrote: "This Cobra should satisfy even the most extreme performance enthusiasts and make Corvette drivers a little nervous."

And The Car Connection wrote: "With all the power promised for the new Cobra GT500, it's likely that almost everyone will have to follow."

Dealers seem to like it, too.

"I think the Shelby Cobra GT500 is awesome," said Grant Guzowski, a sales representative at Capistrano Ford in Orange County, California. "I have a customer who is waiting to get on a list to buy one. He can't wait. As soon as it comes out, he is going to buy one. Ford seems to have hit all the critical areas: straight-line acceleration, cornering, brakes, performance times. If you can buy a Mustang Cobra that will compete with a Porsche 911, like you can with this car, that's amazing. We're really excited. We can't wait to see them in the dealership."

I think it looks pretty awesome, and I've always loved cobras (mustangs too, but they aren't the greatest performers).

To me its not only the high horsepower but just the badass factor of the car.

Although competing with 911's is a little exagerrated. Straight line performance yes, but 911's handling is light years ahead.

Gt-500

The GT-500 is an awesome car. Especially the fact that it will only cost about 40K American. I mean the 911 coupe (H6) is $69 000 Canadian. Of course I haven't seen a GT-500 convertible which the 911 already has one but costs $79 000 Canadian. (Still H6) There probably will be a GT-500 convertible anyway. But if you look at the top trims of the 911 it gets pretty tight being the Turbo S Coupe H6 is $131 000. The Gt-500 still offers the same if not better acceleration but still doesn't match up for handling. American handling has never been as good as european handling. For example: A Dodge Viper does 0-100 km in under 4.1 seconds. Compare that to the Mercedes SL (6.0 V12) which does 0-100 in 4.4 seconds. And that's a 6.0 Liter V12 with 606 HP compared to a 8.3 Liter V10. Few more liters there let's say but the Mercedes out-handles it any most situations. I still love the rumble of the V10. (I've been in one) Sorry if this is completley off-topic form going to Vipers from GT-500s.

I personally like the new SVT Mustang, and the new Saleen stang. I have yet to see the GT-500 stang, but I do recal seeing a Newer Mustang called the GT-R. IMO, it looks too ricey. I also dont like the looks of the new Mustangs. Only the SVT and Saleen stylings make me drool.

Thanks a lot.

I also retract part of my previous statement. I don't like the newer Mustangs that have those lights in the grille. I mean cmon. What they hell are those? Foglights need to be closer to the ground to work correctly, and if they're headlights....ugly.

I totally agree about the foglights on the GT. They ruin the look and its the only reason I would choose a V6 Mustang over a GT. But, yes, the GT-500 looks great, and it'll be pretty exciting. It's also nice that Ford went back to a classic name with the Shelby GT-500. All in all, very happy!

You guys are nuts, I like the GT look way better with the lights on the grill, it completes the front. The v6 looks plain from the front. Besides, are they fog lights, or high beams?
