Cylinder Deactivation

Does anyone know anything about Cylinder Deactivation. As to how exactly it works. I couldn't find much of an explanation on Though I didn't really look too hard.

What I really want to know is what happens to the cylinders when the are shut down. They obviously turn the fuel, and spark off. But are the valves always open, and do they mabey add some extra lubrication to the non firing cylinders? Do they always shut off the same bank, or same set of cylinders, or do they rotate which ones are off?

Hopefully this will help answer some of your questions, it's the wiki on variable displacement systems.
