Mercury Mystique hood lock

Hi,

The hood release cable seems to be functional on my car; however, when I close the hood, the hood is not secured. In other words, the the hood can still be lifted so as to release the lock (underneath the hood) without first pulling the hood release from within the car. What is the problem here, and is there anyway that I can fix this? The car is a 1998 Mercury Mystique LS 2.5L V6 Auto.

The lock latch is not catching for one of two reasons.

#1 a machanical problem with the latch itself.

#2 the hood stops are out of adjustment.

I choose #2 as the more likely of the two so my advice is to start there. Just turn the hood stops down a few turns and give the hood a good firm slam.

Thanks for the reply. Just for clarification, the hood has one latch to secure itself from within the car and another to open once the initial trigger is pulled, correct? By "hood stops" are you referring to the hook at the end of the hood release cable?
