If you are dead-set on imports, import a Silvia, I hear they are nice. (and rare.)

Where to start???

Imports cover lots of area and you could quickly climb the performance ladder for very little money... Here is what i would say... look at what you can spend... if you straight rolling drop 100 gs and import a skyline gtr R34 and for minimal money you could smoke anything on the road. But not everyone can do that if you can spend 40 gs get the new Elise that is coming to america. crazy preformace and a sweet looking car... total package. Next step down should be the WRX STi or the EVO 8. I prefer the STi but that is me. Then you could go down again and i would get s2000 RX-7 something to that effect. Simply put you can do alot . But dont rice another civic. enough is enough!

I've always been a fan of Subaru. I think the H-engine and the AWD is the perfect combo for an excellent car. However, if you want something a little older, the early 90's Nissan Z cars (like the 240SX) were awesome and have a lot of potential.

an RX7 or civic would be good for lower costs. subaru WRX sti or possibly a Honda S2000 would also be alright.
