Hesitation and a diesel sound.....

I have an 1988 Crown Victoria and it recently began to hesitate bad and acts like it has no pick up and go. It also started sounding like it is a diesel engine, but not quite as loud as a true diesel. Does anyone know what might be wrong, or have any suggestions? Anything would be greatly appreciated!

you mean it sounds like its detonating? some of that diesel sound comes off of the valvetrain (high compression, in my diesel all the air has to pass into this compression chamber, making it 21:1 compression)

You should probably get a tuneup, check your timing. Sometimes your timing chain can stretch, and it will screw up your timing.

Also, your carb could be running a lean air/fuel ratio, check it.
