Question Temp guage problems?

I have a 1997 Pontiac Grand am SE with the 2.4L engine my problem is when i am in traffic or moving slowly the engine seems to get hot and the tmp guage moves well over halfway almost to the overheat point but once i get it back in open air and move faster everything seems to be fine this problem has mostly happened on warm days but sometimes at night also any input would be greatley appreciated thx

sounds like a electric cooling fan is not turning on. check power to the motor, by way of the fuse, relay, and wiring. if those are good with a schematic diagram you can identify the control wire (from the Engine Control Module) to the relay and verify all is good. not likely that the ECM is bad. good luck
