Sell my BMW for a Ford Focus?

Call me crazy or what have you but I'm thinking about selling my 1990 BMW 535i for a 2000 Ford Focus ZX3 (hatchback). Does this sound really stupid to anyone? The main reason is that I need a car with better gas mileage. I'm currently getting 16.7mpg in city/highway driving. That's not awful I guess but 25/34 for the Focus sounds a lot better. And from what I've read and a test drive; I hear/feel the Focus hatch is a fun little car.

What do you think?

From what you described - its not a bad thing to do. Your current car is 13 model years old, so as a daily driver you'd probably be better off with the Focus. Its not going to be as nice as the beamer, but I bet the Focus will have all the amenities that it has.

Yes, the Focus may drive ok, but if you are keeping for the long term, which you did with your BMW, I would go with Honda or Toyota. Ford reliabily is crap (please Ford lovers, dont hurt me). I have 2 Toyotas and they are great cars, and they last forever. If you are looking at a Focus type car, try the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic or Nissan Sentra. If you want a hatchback try the Toyota Matrix. If you are looking at a car this small however, and are not going to modify it, and you are willing to shift, get manual. When you add A/C and Auto to these little four bangers, you have no power left for acceleration, as my Corolla w/ 3spd auto is very tepid on the acceleration. Hope that helps.

Another thing about the Focus on why you should not get one:

"Ford's attempt to focus on safety and reliability isn't getting much help from its recall-plagued subcompact, the Focus. With nine safety recalls and five defect investigations so far, the Focus is turning into a major black eye for Ford." www.ConsumerAffairs.com

Need I say more?

He's right you know. Also check into Volkswagen. They last a long time, are reliable, and get good gas milage. Me, I drive a 1989 Honda Civic. It's been great to me. No breakdowns or major maintanance in 190,000 miles. That is how old it is BTW. I am looking into getting an Integra, Acura Legend [All the comforts of your BMW + really reliable + long lasting] I suggest also the new Nissan Sentra SE-R. Very cool car!

On another note: Ford has always been known for tranny, headgasket, and rollover problems. With that many recalls I would not ever own one. Chevy on the other hand is better. Of course steer clear of Mitsubishi, Kia, Hyundai, and Daewoo. The Korean cars are cheap for a reason.

One correction to your post, Mitsubishi is Japenese. But, you were right in saying to stay away from them; They dont get very good reliability ratings. Also, if you have 24 thou, check into the Subaru Impreza WRX. That is an awesome car. Subaru seems to be ok as for reliability, and that car is pretty fast at 0-60 in 5.5 sec. It also is ok on gas, somewhere around 23/25 if i remember right.

That mpg doesn't sound right. I'd have thought you should be getting better. Try a new dizzy cap, air filter, etc. basically give the thing a damn good service and going over.

Do not get the focus it wont last past 140 k fords are not good in the long run (no american cars are that great) if you plan on keeping it long you would be best on getting another bmw or a honda the honda will last you longer my friend has one going on 250k of course the engine is a little slugish but they will take you forever without any major problems i think you would be crazy to get a focus

BAVARIANM5WORKS, I think that the guy who you're giving advice to will already have made his decision by now

Actually mazda6man, you're out by about eight and a half months or so but never mind.
This is another example of the sort of topic that's not worth resurrecting. Who else but the thread starter who is now long gone from here would want to read posts where people have been comparing a Focus to a BMW?
Besides, BAVARIANM5WORKS seems a bit
