America is using all our...

Oil. I am no doubt digging a large hole for myself, but this is my first post so I thought I'd enter with a bang. Am I right though? America's idea of a small car is a 2.5L Mondeo (sorry Taurus). And has anyone heard of a "Diesel" car in the States?

No doubt this is a common mis-conception and I am completely wrong. You guys are probably all converting your Cheveys to LPG as we speak.

Turbo Diesel Beetle? I don't think we do a Diesel version of that over here, no, I wasn't being sarcastic! I was however expecting a sarcastic reply, so I thank you for your sincerity.

LPG or Liquid Petroleum Gas - fairly new, basically converts your car to run off, well, gas. Don't know much about it but it's a hell of a lot cheaper to run, after the intial conversion costing about 600, and performance is pretty similar. Only problem is filling up, their aint many places that supply it yet.

Really? America is using all of the worlds oil? America is a big country, the third largest and third most populated, and is over 2.5 times larger than Western Europe. Our oil usage is going to be high no matter what we do. The Unites States imports 56% of its oil every year (almost as much from Canada as from Persian Gulf nations), meanwhile, by 2020, the EU will importing fully 90% of its oil. I would bet, assuming the EU has about the same population as the US, that EU will be consuming far more external oil resources than the United States will be.

Let's start by correcting or clarifying some statements.

1. UK ford Mondeo = US Ford Contour.
2. Yes we have heard of diesels. Had them here for years.
3. Fortunately we don't all drive Chevy's. Most of them have to be pushed anyway. 8)
4. Yes you have TDI New Beetles in the UK.
5. LPG new? Hardly, it's been around mostly in fleet use for years.
6. LPG may be cheaper over there but only because it's not taxed as much as petrol. Basically the same reason as the price differential between petrol and diesel.
7. This was not stated but implied. LPG is no more economical than gasoline. When you take into account the energy to process it for use, and the fact that you actually get much worse mileage (because of much lower energy potential) at best it's equal to gas and in many situations worse.
8. Widowmaker2k has obviously done his homework on this. While I readily agree there are many people in this country who waste fuel, that can also be said for people all around the world. You are probably just more concientious about it because of higher prices. Compartively we have much cheaper gas than most of the world. The difference is we have a free market economy where the UK and most of Europe borders on socialism. And please save the "you don't know what it's like here". I have lived in several European countries including the UK.

I'm sure I have missed something but I'm tired of typing. Comments?

Oh gee, I'm sorry, you started a thread so that normally means you're looking for a response. I'm also sorry if I confused you with facts. I notice you don't have anything intelligent to say for yourself.
