The function of an alternator??? I believe that it's function is to charge the car's battery... But then again, I'm not a mechanic so I'm not 100% sure.

How does it work??? I would assume that it uses the kenetic energy from the car motor to turn a turbine located in the alternator, and the resulting electrical flow would be chanenlled into the car battery... Again, I'm not a mechanic so I'm not 100% sure.

You're correct, that was off-topic... I'm curious as to why you potsed that questiom on this particular thread

Damn good question.

As for your problem, I'm pretty sure that in order to receive help, you need to post the details of your own issue without worrying about any other Cavalier that might be stalling. One of the stickies on this forum describes how to properly state your problem.
