Inop speedometer and tach

I must have missed the part where I introduce myself - regular guy with kids and a Jetta. Anyone have advice on a suddenly inoperative tach and speedometer? The odometer (electronic) still works. 98 Jetta GLX Oh, I guess I forgot the part where I spent the summer in Iraq and my car sat for 4 months.

Without any more information than that, my best guess based on experience with this is the Vegas summer heat fried the circuit board on the back of the instrument cluster. This is a fairly common occurrence on VW's in high temp areas where the windows are kept closed. I bet that not only the odometer is still working but also the idiot lights and the dash lights. That pretty much pegs it.
