Lightbulb Looking to buy an Import? Buying Guide

The following information below will help alot of new people interested in buying a car or even those of us who allready know most of it but just need a refresher.

Please for the love of god, stop asking up what car to purchase. People we don't know what you need and we don't know what is best for you. We also are not car gods and can't predict car races. You want some real proof, go see for yourself. The best proof is living proof. Look at the list, see what you like. Pick for yourself. If you still have questions, then ask about specific cars.(Thanks Bav). Alright, below are a list of cars and a little bit about them. In ABC Order by make.

ACURA

Integra Coupe(4-Door) 1990-1993
Price: $1100-$5100
Class: Sport Compact
Layout: Transverse front-engine/front-wheel drive
Engine(s): Dohc I4 1.7L 160HP 117FT-LB
Dohc I4 1.8L 130-140HP 121-126FT-LB
Weight: 2560lbs(2605lbs)
Tranny: 5-Speed manual/4-speed overdrive automatic

RS(Base)-1.8L
LS(Mid-level)-1.8L
GS(Sports)-1.8L
GS-R(Special Sports Edition)1.7L/w VTEC

The Acura Integra is a small coupe capable of good track performance. I would'nt call this car a balls out drag racer, but it will definetly hold to its own name in autocross tournaments. Many aftermarket modifications are readily available for this car. If you are discouraged with the engine in the GS,LS, or RS there are many swaps available. I will explain that at a later time. This is a great car for a beginning import enthuisiast.

Level 1 Beginner

Integra Coupe(4-Door) 1994-2001
Price: $6,200-$18,000
Class: Sport Compact
Layout: Transverse front-engine/front-wheel drive
Engine(s): Dohc I4 1.8L 142HP 127FT-LB
Dohc I4 1.8L 170HP 128FT-LB
Dohc I41 1.8L 195HP 130FT-LB
Weight: 2529lbs(2628lbs)
Tranny: 5-speed manual/4-speed automatic

RS(Base) 1.8L 142HP
LS(Luxery)1.8L 142HP
GS-R(Sports)1.8L 170HP VTEC
Type-R(Special Sports Edition)1.8L 195HP VTEC

Same as the previous generation. The Integra Type-R, conned one of the greatest FWD cars ever made, is another story on its own. This is a born track star. Many available mods for the Type-R, but with its stock capabilities who will need it?

Level 1 Beginner
Level 2 Intermediate(Type-R)

1991-95 Acura Legend
Price: $3500-$10,000
Class: Midsize Sedan
Layout: Transverse front-engine/front-wheel drive
Engine(s): Sohc V6 3.2L 200HP 210FT-LB
Sohc V6 3.2L 230HP 206FT-LB
Weight: 3516lbs
Tranny: 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual/ 4-speed automatic

Coupe/ GS Sedan 230HP 6-speed
L,LS
Sedan 200HP 5-Speed
L,LS

The Legend is the midsized sedan sports car of the tuner market. They come with nice beefy V6 engines and 5 or 6-speed gear boxes. Would'nt recommend this car to a person looking to compete in drag races, but this is definetly a sedan to modfiy to compete in show or just to cruise arround in style and power. Easily modified, a little more complex to work with than you average Civc, but worth good money of you do it right.

Level 2 Intermediate

Acura RSX
Price: $18,261-21,261
Class: Sports Compact
Layout: Front-wheel drive
Engine(s): Dohc I4 2.0L 160HP @ 2500 141FT-LB @4000
Dohc I4 2.0L 200HP @ 7400 142FT-LB @ 6000
Weight: 2721lbs
Tranny: 6-Speed Manual or 5-speed manual/ 5-speed automatic

Base 160HP
Type-S 200HP

The recreation the the Acura Integra. The RSX may just be the continuation of the greatest FWD car ever made. Believe be it holds this name with prowess and pride. Not for the faint pocketed, and although there are many mods available for this car; I would'nt recomend this car for any beginner.

Level 2 Intermediate(Base)
Level 3 Tuner(Type-S)

HONDA

1990-93 Honda Accord

Now the number 1 selling car in the US, the Honda Accord is a great tuner car. Can be used for many purposes, from show car to sound competitor. Takes a dedicated person to turn this one into a drag racer, but it is posible. Is'nt exaclty too heavy to do either, and there are lots of upgrades available for this car. JDM swaps readily available

Great car, similar to the year above. Again, no die hard drag racer or race car period. Nice for show cars, sound cars, and possibly good for lower class bracket racing. Can be made to be incredbily fast, but takes dedication.

88-91 Civic(Hatchback)/CRX

Hatcback 70HP
DX,LX,2WD Wagon 92HP
Si,EX,4WD Wagon 108HP

Commonly known as the "pocket rocket", the 4rth Generation Civic/CRX are ultimate track cars. They have the great suspension, well geared trannys, and with proper tuning and mods can be turned into the ultimate track or drag car. Very easy to find, lots of JDM swaps available.

Level 1 Beginner

1992-95 Honda Civic
Price: $1100-5000

CX 70HP
VX 92HP VTEC-E

Si,EX(Sedan) 125HP VTEC

One of the greatest years for the Honda Civic. They came in perfect balance of coupes, sedans, and hatchbacks. Great cars for autocross and track competitions alike. Probably the most modified car in the import tuner market. Many JDM engine swaps available.

Level 1 Beginner

1996-2000 Honda Civic

Tranny: 5-Speed manual/4-Speed automatic/CVT(continuously variable) automatic transmission

CX,DX,LX 106HP
HX 115HP
EX 127HP
Si 160HP

Yet another great year for the Honda civc. Best Seller in many magazines. Not that an import tuner would use a civic for all of its selling points, but its a nice think to know. Anywhos, great car, many aftermarket mods available. JDM engine swaps are readily available, but at this stage they get a tad bit more complicated.

Level 1 Beginner
Level 2 Intermediate(Si)

2000-2003 Honda Civic

Class: Compact Sedan

DX,LX 1.7L 115HP
HX,GX 1.7L 117HP
EX 1.7L 127HP
Si 2.0

Similar to the year above, more horsepower increase. These hondas are not as suspension worthy as its predesessor 4rth and 5th generation. None the less, still a good car.

Part 2

2000-03 Honda S2000
Price: $18,900-28,400
Class: Sports Car
Layout: Longitudinal front engine/rear-wheel drive
Engine(s): Dohc I4 2.0L 240HP 153FT-LB
Weight,lbs: 2809
Tranny: 6-Speed Manual

S2000

The infamous S2K. While not the car for your everday beginner, it is more than well worth the money if you have the cash to spend on it. Beautiful track car and comes stock pulling 13 second quarter mile times. Many mods available, but this car isn't for the faint pocketed. Nice tuner platform

Level 3 Tuner

INFINITI

Infiniti G35
Price: $25,607-29,384
Class: Premium Sedan
Layout: Rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive
Engine(s): Dohc V6 3.5L 260HP 260FT-LB
Dohc V6 3.5L 280HP 270FT-LB
Weight,lbs: 3416(Coupe) 3336(Sedan)
Tranny: 6-Speed manual/ 5-speed automatic

Sedan 260HP
Coupe 280HP

The G35 is the USDM version of what appears to to be the Skyline R35. Not exactly the easiest car to own, but I added it for some people have 28K for cars and since all of you seem to be Skyline crazy; I figure this is the closest you can get to one short of $80,000. Uses same VQ35DE as the 350Z(Z33) and GReddy has done us the favor of making a twin turbo kit. Again not for the faint pocketed.

Level 3 Tuner

LEXUS

Lexus IS 300

Weight,lbs: 3255
Tranny: 5-Speed Manual/5-Speed automatic

IS300

The IS300 uses the same engine as the Supra, but in a naturally aspirated form. Be that it may, does not mean you can't bring Supra like performance to this car. The Lexus IS300 is born to drive, and if you own one or plan on buying one I highly suggest you take it out to a track and run a few laps. I garauntee you'll be stick smiling at the end of a few tire burns arround the corners. Great car, hits the wallet hard. Not for the intermediate

Engine(s): Turbocharged Dohc I4 2.0L 170HP 160LB-FT

Tranny: 5-Speed Manual

Mazdaspeed Protege

Whats as good as a Neon SRT-4, drives like a brand new Honda, cost the same price and comes stock with a turbocharger? The MazdaSpeed Protege of course! Beautiful car. I recommend this as an alternative to turbochargins a FWD car. Buy this the PRotege Speed and you won't be dissapointed.

Level 2 Intermediate

1990-92 Mazda RX-7
Price: $1600-4100
Class: Sports Car
Layout: Longitudal front-engine/rear-whweel drive
Engine(s): 2 Rotor Wankel 1.3L 160HP 140LB-FT
Turbocharged 2-Rotor Wankel 1.3L 200HP 195LB-FT
Weight,lbs: 3045(Convertible) 2888(2+2) 2800(Coupe)
Tranny: 5-speed manual/ 4-speed automatic

In my opinions, the greatest car that mazda has ever made. The RX-7. Good for numerous ammounts of sporty auto events, and with a powerful rotary engine to drive it. There are even V8 swaps available for the RX-7. For all you drifters! This is a great beginner carp. RX-7's will smoke the doors off those AE82's and S13's. Not to mention it holds it on at the staging lights. Very good car.

Level 1 Beginner

1993-95 Mazda RX-7
Price: $7300-15,000

Engine(s):Twin-Turbocharged 2-Rotor Wankel 1.3L 225HP 217LB-FT
Weight,lbs: 2826
Tranny: 5-speed manual/4-speed automatic

Same great car, even better engine. These tend to get a tad bit expensive. If you've got the money go for it, great car.

Level 2 Intermediate.

2004 Mazda RX-8
Price: $23,274-24,659
Class: Sports Car
Layout: FR

Renesis Rotary 1.3L 238HP 159LB-FT
Weight,lbs: 3029
Tranny: 6-Speed Manual/4-speed automatic

The new generation of RX series. The RX-8 is a very controversial car in the import world. Not many people own it, but there are plentyful enough mods availble. If you have the money, and are up to the challange. The stock performance is well worth its buying.

Level 3 Tuner

Mazda 3
Price: $12,795-15,793

Without a doubt one of Nissans greatest RWD platforms. The 240SX is the master of imports. Able to be the king of autocross or drifting and even place in top numbers in drag racing competitions. If you're looking to get into competetive racing I sugges the 240SX for a starter car. Lots of parts and JDM swaps readily available.

Level 1 Beginner

1995-98 Nissan 240SX
Price: $2300-7800
Class: Sports Car
Layout: Longitudunal front-engine/rear-wheel drive
Engine(s): Dohc I4 2.4L 155HP 160LB-FT

Look Above

Level 2 Intermediate

1990-96 Nissan 300ZX
Price: $6200-15,000
Class: Sports Car
Layout: Longitudinal front-engine/rear-wheel drive
Engine: Dohc V6 3.0 222HP 198LB-Ft
Twin-Turbocharged Dohc V6 3.0 300HP 283LB-FT
Weight,lbs: 3446(Convt.) 3299(Hatcbhack) 3413(2+2)
Tranny: 5-speed manual/4-speed automatic

The 3rd generation of the powerful Nissan/Datsun Z. While these cars are capable of pushing in excess of 700HP, they are extremly heavy and should not be in the hands of most beginners. The RWD platform makes it a good candidate to compete with the 3000GT and Supra in drag racing. Drifting is possible, but due to the heavy nature of this car I would'nt reccomend it for any beginner.

Level 2 Intermediate

1991-93 Nissan NX
Price: $700-2000
Class: Sports Car
Layout: Transverse front-engine/front-wheel drive
Engine: Dohc I4 1.6L 110HP 108LB-FT
Dohc I4 2.0L 140HP 130LB-FT

Class: Midsize Sedan
Layout: Transverse front-engine/front-wheel drive
Engine: Dohv V6 3.0L 190HP 205LB-FT
Weight,lbs: 3001
Tranny: 5-speed manual/4-speed automatic

Nissans midsize sedan. It may be heavy, but with money anything is possible.

Level 2 Intermediate

2002-03 Nissan Sentra SE-R and Spec-V
Price: $5900-14,000
Class: Compact
Layout: Transverse front-engine/front-wheel drive
Engine: Dohc I4 2.5L 175HP 180LB-FT
Tranny: 6-speed manual, 5-speed manual/4-speed automatic
Weight,lbs: 2548

The SE-R and Spec V are the race built versions of the Sentra. With Minor modifications to the engine, and suspension. This would make a great autocross car.

Level 2 Intermediate.

2004 Nissan 350Z
Price: $24,663-34,394
Class: Sports Car
Layout: Rear-wheel drive
Engine: Dohc V6 3.5L 287HP 274LB-FT
Weight, lbs: 3188(Hatchback) 3428(Convt)
Tranny: 6-speed manual/5-speed automatic

The greatest car to be released from Nissan since the Skyline. The 350Z dominates in every aspect of the tuner market. From show car all the way to the drift circuit. This $37,000 piece of masterful equipment is only for the big boys and should not be taken on by amatuers. The 350Z has a V6 engine that is not only begs to be twin turboed, but screams to be red-lined. If you are looking to create a car with Porsche like performance, Ferrari looks, Big block power, and super car speed all in one Japaneese import. The 350Z is the car to do it.

Level 3 Tuner

SUBARU

1993-2001 Subaru Impreza
Price: $4300-11,9000
Class: Compact Car
Layout: Transverse front-engine/front- or all-wheel drive

Sohc H4 2.2L 137HP 145LB-FT
Dohc H4 2.5L 165HP 162LB-Ft
Tranny: 5-speed manual/4-speed automatic
Weight,lbs: 2400(Coupe) 2420(Sedan) 2750(Wagon)

Nothing says performance more than an AWD compact car, and nothing else is more performance than a horizontaly opposed Subaru Engine. Good starter car if the buyer is looking for something in the AWD category.

Level 1 Beginner

1995-99 Subaru Legacy
Price: $2600-10,400
Class: Midsize Car
Layout: Longitudinal front-engine/front- or all-wheel drive
Engine(s): Sohc H4 2.2L 137HP 145LB-FT
Sohc H4 2.5L 165HP 162LB-FT
Tranny: 5-speed manual/4-speed automatic
Weight,lbs: 2570(Sedan) 2685(Wagon)

Level 2 Intermediate

2004 Subaru Impreza
Price: $16,602-31,120

Turbocharged Dohc H4 2.0L 227HP 217LB-FT(WRX)
Turbocharged Dohc H4 2.5L 300HP 300LB-FT(STi)
Tranny:6-speed manual(STi),5-speed manual/4-speed automatic
Weight: 2965(Sedan)

In direct competition with the Lancer Evo, the Subaru STi produces 300 power marks across the board. Great car for drag racing, or rallying. Autocrossing is a maybe. Not for the inexperienced. These cars car produce great power and good numbers on almost any field of auto racing.

Level 2 Intermediate (Base)
Level 3 Tuner (WRX,STi)

That is true... but perhaps he was thinking along price lines... you cant get a Skyline for the same price as most of those cars on the lists.

Hey, maybe you should include some of the cons or drawbacks of those vehicles. I would, but I'm to lazy.
Example;
Eagle talon/eclipse
Major transmission problems, extremely unreliable trannys. Low availability (try finding a gsx or awd tsi....good luck!)
...and etc and etc
But yeah, other wise you definetly did a great job...
I look forward to updates...
Hey, I couldn't find any specs on the subaru svx... I saw one the other day and was like "wtf is that?" someone told me its a quad cam v6 boxter, but I would rather hear it from someone @ these forums instead of my dumbassed friends.
=D
Keep up the good work!
