89 Ford Tempo

I recently acquired an 89 tempo off of my fiance's parents. It's a nice little car. They let me have it for 20 bucks out of their drive-way because they couldnt start it. It just needed plugs and a jump. Now The only thing keeping me from having this car as a commuter car, is the fact that it keeps snapping alternator belts in two. No matter how tight or loose you put the belt on, it gives the squeal of death and snaps. Little insight here please?
