93' lumina not kicking into gear... tran probs

Well when I was driving today my car started kicking in and out of what seemed like neutral, I barely made it up a hill I was on and drifted into a parking lot. Now I can't kick it into reverse or drive (I have auto tranny) my fluid is full, what's the deal, is my tranny F**ked?

Is your fluid dark?

Chances are it needs a trans.

well the tranny it self, sure haha, but for all the extra work you have to do, probably in the 4 grand area extra. The tunnel won't be the same, the mounts may be different, you have to add a shifter, clutch forks, you'd need a new flywheel, wiring harness, possibly the computer... etc etc etc. It's not worth it.

haha, just get a standard car. Also, to transform one into a stick car, you pretty much need a donor car that's a stick car, you have to have them side-by-side to get all the mounts right blah blah blah, just not worth it on FWD cars, RWD's aren't so bad.

HAHAHA, I had that problem with my 93' Lumina Z34 just 2 weeks ago. I checked the tranny fluid and it had apparently been prolly 2x below where the minimum area is. I replaced the fluid and it didn't work (wasn't suprised, either.) Then, after a week of sitting, I had to make a grocery run. I got into the car, put it in reverse and as I was backing out, I heard a metal popping sound. After I pulled out of the space, I realised that the transmission is working. Sucks the same is happening to you. When you decide to get the tranny replaced, get it from a junkyard for no more than 350, and pay no more than 450 for labor. That's what the estimate I got was from some people in my area. Someone tells you more than 900, tell them to shove it.

Damn that sucks, but yea labor isnt a prob for me, I have a mechanic cousin that can hook me up, it just sucks I really don't want to put any money into this car at all, a Z34 is one thing, but a 4 door sedan sucks.

Ouch, not to add insult to injury, but, damn, that's a bad car. Chevy made a mistake with most of their Lumina models. Go get a Geo storm or something

Blah, get a grand prix Body's pretty much the same as a lumina, GTP model makes something like 205hp with the 3.4 DOHC, crap motor, but it still made lots of power. Grand Prix's all the way

Heh, my Lumina Z34 with a 3.4 DOHC makes 210 fwhp with 215 torque with a 3600lb body. And that's not a crap motor. I guarantee that Grand Prix's motor will last a long time. It's American, also, don't forget that.

Blah, they're horrible motors, they have a lot of problems, hell, they give you 3 hours to change the alternator on them, they put it down by the axel . What a fun job that was. Definately GM's worst designed motor ever. Period. It's alright if you can work on it yourself and don't mind working on it often and a lot, but other than that, not suggested. To me, the power they make is worth all the problems they have, I'd definately buy a GTP with the 3.4. I know it's "American", I bet if I looked, somewhere I'd see a "made in Japan" sticker on the car :p

2.8

they aren't nearly as bad as the 2.8L rod knock issue (the reason GM moved away from them).

Same goes for the 3.1 btw. (I have a 2.8 in my car, rebuilding a 3.1 for it)

I know that first hand... twice. My current motor knocks, though knocking doesn't really matter, it might just do this forever. My last one wasn't the rod, but the crank, they were bad for the cranks too.

Other than that, which aren't really big problems, because they just come when the motor gets old and time to blow up anyway, they're much better motors than the 3.4's, less maintenance and better designed. Everything about the 3.4's seemingly had problems, but whatever, small price to pay to get 200+ ponies.
